Since this is the last Harry Potter film until Jokey Rawlplug releases the prequels (as she almost certainly will) it probably won't make any difference what we think about it, you'll all troop along to the cinema or your local oriental pub DVD distributor anyway. However, as you know, we care little for your human emotions and are more than willing to ram our opinions down your throat come what may. Because we're shits. Shits, shits, shits. Plus our breath smells awful and no-one listens to us even when we do have important things say. WE'RE PEOPLE TOO, YOU KNOW.
Still, back to the film. Firstly, and potentially most important of all, the one thing you must do before going to watch Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallow Part 2 is watch Part 1. Ideally just before. There's no standalone cinematic experience here, Part 2 takes you straight into the action where Part 1 left off, which is great for all the avid fans who've watched every film at least five times and know exactly what's going on, but a bit disorienting for everyone else who's expecting to be gently welcomed back into the franchise.
Anyway, assuming you haven't read the books, or it was such a long time ago you've actually forgotten, the plot for the finale of the Harry Potter series concerns itself with a two pronged attack by Harry and his pals against his arch nemesis Voldemort and his pals. A bit like an after school scrap, except with a lot more death and a lot less latent homoerotic tension. Less, but not none.
On the one side Harry, Ron and Emma Watson for Lancôme are trying to find and destroy the last remaining Horcruxes (objects that are Voldemort's source of immortality) in order to kill Voldemort himself, while all their close friends instead decide to spend their time defending Hogwarts from attack by Voldemort's pals, the evil wizards. It's at this point that the series starts veer away from reality as no self-respecting child defend his school from destruction, even if his attackers did look a bit like Joy Division tribute band. As you can imagine, this results in tears, stab wounds, quite a few deaths and a final showdown between Harry and Voldemort. What could possibly happen after that? We'll let you guess.
Now, one of the largest and most obvious criticisms to level at the entire Harry Potter franchise is the fact that the three main characters simply cannot act, except possibly Rupert Grint, although he's hardly Laurence Olivier. Having said that, it's hardly surprising the three of them haven't been up the red carpet at the Academy Awards yet, after all, they were picked out of obscurity ten years ago and have been required to 'perform' in every film since, without much training of any kind. Seemingly. So it's hard to hold it against them.
However, aside from poor old Daniel, Emma and Rupert, the cast as a whole are pretty superb, and a joy to watch. Especially Alan Rickman who plays the definitely-not-in-any-way-gay bad guy with aplomb. That's right, a plum.
Moving on from the main cast, the special effects for Deathly Hallows 2 are superb. As the series has become darker in tone so have the CGI effects become more intense and this film is the best of the lot. Funnily enough the fact it was made in 3D, a technique which normally seems like such such a tacked-on gimmick, is actually used to great effect here, and is nowhere near as intrusive as in some other films. Mentioning no names.
We weren't expecting much before we went to Deathly Hallows 2, having never been an enormous fan of the books or previous films, and seemingly every person under the age of 30 telling us it was the 'end of an era' and 'the best series ever' just served to rub salt in an already slightly fusty wound. However, despite our serious doubts about the main three actors being realised almost instantly as Daniel Radcliffeseemed about to laugh during interrogation near the beginning, the film actually turned out to be a superb end to the fantasy series, and certainly the best film so far.
Daniel Radcliffe .. =)
